Blog EntryMy Dictionary Skipped a PeriodMay 13, '08 10:58 AM
for everyone

Those of you who have read my blogs, or my replies to your blogs, or almost any of my comments and/or notes, you know that I am a, well, 'creative' speller.  If it wasn't for my handy dandy, trusty dusty dictionary, I would be lost.

Unfortunately, sometimes lugging around a big old honkin' leather bound dictionary isn't very handy dandy.  At times like this, I just roll the dice, and hope the word I am sounding out like a 2nd grader comes out halfway resembling what I want it to.

Case in point.  I was filling out a form this morning, and I didn't know how to spell "periodically", (-roid, or -riod).  I stood there, saying it over and over, slowly, stretching it out, saying it again, trying to sound it out  (I am sure I looked like a ninny, and probably scared some of the people around me) and finally wrote what I thought was correct.

When I came home, I went straight to my dictionary, and tried to look it up.  ITS NOT THERE!!!  There is no "period" or variation thereof!!!

Does this mean what I think it means??  Should I be boiling water and ripping up sheets, for whatever reason people boil water and rip up perfectly good sheets?  Am I about to be Auntie to little Thesaurus or Glossary?

I'm going to put the dictionary on a pile of blankies.  Maybe it will make a nest, and take care of all this while I am mowing the yard.

It's staring at me with a resentful look.  Ok, I will get it some ice chips, but then I am OUTTA here!

Hi Bliss,
I hate when that happens!! But in those situations ... look for another word that is similar to the one you want to use ... periodically...turn it into occasionally or sometimes LOL May not sound the same ,but it works lol.
If you get to be an Auntie we want pics of the babies!!
Have a great day!!

This has to be good news! But, I just hope the father of little Theo or Glossie isn't going to be a fink and deny paternity, so if I were you I'd check all the other books near the dictionary right now. Any of them with their covers slightly open - that's the one. If they're leather-bound...hmmmmmmm, kinky!

My trusty Oxford Concise is not to blame! (I just checked).

The last time I checked to see if a word was missing, was my bro's fault. He used to call me Susan Gullible Ashworth when we were kids 'cos I believed everything he told me. A few years ago he told me 'gullible' had been removed because it was deemed offensive. I actually went and looked.

Geoff strikes again!! It's like Charlie Brown and Lucy when she keeps eternally pulling the ball away from him when he runs up to kick it. :)

DeeAnne, The rabbit got very weird, hopped about in circles and did some backflips, but didn't die.

Sue, I have a younger brother like that. He gets me every single freaking time!!!!

Lynn, here hon, have some burbon, that always help me when I thud. Sometimes, it even MAKES me thud.

Bowser, I have several open books laying about. They ALL look guilty. The ones bound in leather wont even look me in the eye!

Guy, its the New World Dictionary of American English. Third college edition. Apparently, it's not quite "New World" enough!

Lady, you will be the first to see the pictures! Dont worry, I will clean up the babies first!!

T, I need some sort of portable device, similar to a computer, that I can carry with me, and use the spell check, or look up words on any time I want. Is there such a magic contraption??

Maybe if you just eat a few pages of your dictionary the words will sink in.
Then you can always say to people "you took the words right out of my mouth"............LOL
